A jar of money with a plant growing from it, symbolising investment in growth

How much does a Fractional CMO cost in the UK?

The short answer: an experienced Fractional CMO in the UK will typically cost somewhere between £750 and £1,500 a day, although specialist or highly experienced operators can charge more.

For an ongoing engagement, that can translate into anything from around £3,000 a month for light-touch support to £10,000+ for a more embedded senior leadership role.

That’s a wide range.

The reason is simple: buying one or two advisory days a month is very different from bringing someone into the leadership team two or three days a week to run marketing.

So the more useful question is: what are you actually buying for the money?

There are a few variables that make the biggest difference.

Some companies need a senior marketer for a day a week. Others need two or three days, particularly during a period of change, growth or transformation.

More time obviously means a higher monthly cost, but it should also mean greater ownership and involvement.

A Fractional CMO working two days a week should be doing far more than attending leadership meetings and producing recommendations. They should be helping lead the marketing function.

“Fractional CMO” has become a broad label.

Someone with ten years of marketing experience and someone who has led global marketing teams for thirty years may use the same title, but they bring very different levels of experience, judgement and capability.

That naturally affects price.

There’s a big difference between:

  • providing strategic advice
  • developing a marketing plan
  • leading a marketing team
  • managing agencies
  • owning budgets and performance
  • leading a repositioning or launch
  • rebuilding the marketing function

The greater the responsibility, complexity and commercial consequence, the more senior the engagement needs to be.

A simple way to think about it is:

Usually a small number of days each month.

Best suited to a founder or leadership team that wants regular senior marketing input but already has the people needed to deliver.

Useful when the business needs clearer marketing leadership and prioritisation, but has an internal team or agencies doing most of the execution.

A much more embedded role.

At this level, the Fractional CMO can usually take meaningful responsibility for strategy, team leadership, agencies, performance and implementation.

This starts to look much closer to an interim Marketing Director or CMO role.

It can work well during a major transformation, leadership gap or high-growth phase, but it may also be a sign that the business is approaching the point where a full-time senior hire makes sense.

This is where the economics become interesting.

A senior full-time Marketing Director or CMO comes with more than salary. There is employer National Insurance, pension, bonus, benefits, recruitment costs and the commitment of another permanent executive hire.

A fractional model gives the business access to senior capability for only the amount of time it actually needs.

That can make a lot of sense for a growing SME or scale-up where the marketing decisions have become strategically important, but the business doesn’t yet require a five-day-a-week CMO.

It also gives the company flexibility.

The level of support can increase during a launch, repositioning or transformation and reduce again once the business has stronger systems, people and direction in place.

Day rate matters, but I wouldn’t make it the deciding factor.

Look at what the engagement actually includes.

Ask:

  • What will this person take responsibility for?
  • How involved will they be between their formal working days?
  • Will they lead the team and agencies or simply advise them?
  • What commercial outcomes are they expected to influence?
  • What relevant experience do they bring?
  • Are they able to work at both leadership and delivery level?
  • What should be different in the business six months from now?

A cheaper Fractional CMO who spends most of their time advising may ultimately deliver less value than someone more expensive who can quickly diagnose the issues, make stronger decisions and lead the organisation through change.

They can all play useful roles, but they solve different needs.

A marketing strategy consultant is usually brought in for a defined challenge – diagnosis, positioning, strategy or a specific commercial problem.

An agency provides specialist capability and execution.

A Fractional CMO or Marketing Director becomes part of the business and takes senior responsibility for marketing direction and performance.

In many companies, the Fractional CMO will actually lead the agencies and specialists already in place.

My fractional engagements typically fall between £800 and £1,200 per day.

That’s a guide rather than a fixed tariff. The final rate depends on the size and complexity of the brief, the level of responsibility involved, how many days a week are needed and the duration of the engagement.

A short, intensive project may therefore be structured differently from a longer-term embedded role. Equally, a commitment of several days a week can create more flexibility around the day rate.

I’m also open to different remuneration models where they make sense. With start-ups in particular, that can include a blended structure combining cash fees with equity or another form of longer-term upside.

The important thing is to agree a structure that reflects the work involved, the stage of the business and the value of the engagement – and that works commercially for both sides.

That depends on the size of the decisions they are helping the business make.

If marketing is relatively simple and mainly requires execution, senior fractional leadership may be unnecessary.

But when growth has stalled, the marketing function lacks direction, several agencies or teams need leadership, or the business is approaching a major commercial move, the quality of the marketing decisions can become far more valuable than the number of days purchased.

The right Fractional CMO should leave the business with stronger marketing, clearer priorities, better capability and greater confidence about where to invest.

If you’re trying to work out what level of senior marketing support your business actually needs, start with the challenge rather than the number of days.
